South Auckland is a hub of community spirit, and there are resources available to assist families during the colder months. Local community groups often offer free or low-cost activities and support programs that can help you survive your winter blues and stress.

Community Resource Suggestions
  1. Food Banks: These can provide essential food to help stretch your budget further and add some staple foods to your pantry to survive through the winter months. Reach out to your local food bank or visit your local CAB to find out where to find help. Visit your nearest budgeting service who can offer free help and can refer you to your local food bank.
  2. Community Workshops: Engage in free workshops that teach budgeting, cooking, and other life skills that can help you manage your budget through the winter months. There are free online articles and information that can help you get started.
  3. Social Groups: Join your local community Facebook page or group to share resources, tips and support with neighbours and also keep up to date with free services, events and help in your local community.
  4. Health Clinics: Local clinics often offer free or low-cost health checks and vaccinations. Keeping up with these can help prevent illnesses during the winter months, reducing the likelihood of sick kids and parents.
  5. Seasonal Produce Swaps:  Participate in local produce swaps where you can trade goods like lemons, which are in season during winter, for other fruits and vegetables. This encourages healthy eating and reduces food costs. You can find your local swap online or visit your local library for more information.
Winter doesn't have to be a burden on your budget. By planning meals, shopping smart, and taking advantage of community resources, you can keep your family warm and well-nourished without breaking the bank. Remember, you are not alone, and the community of South Auckland is here to support you. Stay warm, stay positive, and embrace the beauty of the winter season with confidence and creativity.

In the winter months all we want to do is stay warm, and the thought about comforting meals grow stronger. However, with the school holidays just wrapping up our household budgets are tight and almost empty. It is essential to find ways to enjoy warm hearty meals without breaking the budget. Here is your guide to smart shopping and delicious soups that can be stretched across multiple days.

Smart Shopping Tips
  1. Plan Your Meals: Before heading to the store, plan your meals for the week. This reduces impulse buying and ensures you purchase only what you need. Consider meals that use similar ingredients to maximize their use.
  2. Buy in Bulk: Stock up on non-perishable essentials like rice, pasta, and canned goods. Buying in bulk often leads to discounts, and these staples can serve as the base for many meals.
  3. Seasonal Produce: Opt for seasonal vegetables like pumpkin, carrots, and potatoes. They are usually more affordable and at their peak flavour in winter.
  4. Frozen is Your Friend: Don’t shy away from the frozen foods. Frozen vegetables can be just as nutritious as fresh ones and often come at a lower price.
Stretching Your SoupTo make your soups last longer, consider pairing them with bread or rice. This not only makes the meal more satisfying but also stretches the servings further.

Add more liquid whether it be broth, cream it can add flavour and richness to your soup, and you can easily serve more people or serve at a larger gathering.

By adding diced vegetables carrots, celery, onions and any greens on special this instantly bulks up the soup and add nutrients we need during those cold winter nights.

Stir in cooked rice, small pasta, potatoes this can make the soup more filing and stretch further. Include canned or cooked foods for extra protein and volume to your soups.

Lastly, incorporate leftover vegetables and meats to stretch the soup and reduce food waste. By using these techniques, you can easily turn humble pot of soup into a versatile and filling meal that can serve the whole family.

Reducing expenses can be difficult when there is already a shortage in the budget but with some easy savings tips and tricks you can save a little bit more on food costs and create beautiful homecooked meals for your family to enjoy. By choosing versatile ingredients, you can enjoy delicious, warming meals throughout the winter without stretching your budget.
